Don Ratliff, Operations Manager with Solid Waste, recently received his 10-year service award after a decade of hard work, leadership, and dedication to the county and community.
Don first moved to the Flathead Valley nearly 16 years ago and, like many Montanans, was drawn in by the natural beauty and the strong sense of community. “I love Montana… I like being so close to the lake and the quality of people here. It doesn’t feel like anyone is a stranger,” he shared. Don has always had what he calls “the gift of gab,” and it shows in how easily he connects with the people around him, whether it’s his coworkers or the public.
Don’s professional journey with Flathead County started as a mechanic at the landfill, where he quickly made use of his lifelong fascination with machines. He has a degree in technical machining, ran his own mobile machining business, and has been tinkering with engines, transmissions, and heavy equipment since he was a kid. It’s no surprise that he quickly became an essential part of the team. Today, as Operations Manager, Don plays a key role in overseeing the daily functions of the landfill and ensuring the safety and sustainability of Solid Waste operations.
“We’re building a mountain out of refuse, and I have to figure out how to help do that in a safe manner,” he explained. “I love being in a position where I have the opportunity to make changes and help the best way I can.”
Don’s perspective speaks to the bigger picture of what it means to serve the community through public works. His work may be behind the scenes, but the impact is visible across the county—ensuring waste is managed safely, efficiently, and with the future in mind.
Looking ahead, Don says he’s planning to stay with Flathead County for at least another five to eight years. Eventually, he sees himself retiring on his land in Thompson Falls, drinking coffee under the stars and enjoying the peace of the Montana sky.
For now, we’re proud and grateful to have him leading with experience, integrity, and heart. Congratulations, Don, on your ten years with Flathead County—and thank you for everything you do.
