Flathead County does not use a “bare pavement” snow and ice removal process. Drivers should expect winter driving conditions during and after snow events, especially during heavy snowfall, blowing snow, freezing rain, or rapid temperature changes.
When plowing begins
Snow removal operations may begin at 5:30 a.m. or 7:30 a.m., depending on the weather forecast, road conditions, and the type of snow event.
County road priorities
Crews focus on maintaining essential County road service and a reasonable level of public access. Conditions may vary across the county during the same storm.
Winter driving conditions
Please slow down, allow extra travel time, increase following distance, and give snowplows plenty of room to work safely.
Private Snow Removal and County Roads
Do not shovel, blow, or plow snow onto or across a County road. Snow left in the roadway can create a serious traffic hazard for drivers, snowplow operators, and emergency responders.
When snow from a private driveway, private road, or roadside property is pushed onto or across a County road, it can leave berms, packed snow, or icy areas in the travel lane. These conditions may freeze, become difficult to see, or create an unexpected obstacle for vehicles.
Landowners are responsible for snow removal on their property and may be liable if snow placed in the County road right-of-way contributes to a crash, vehicle damage, or other safety issue.
Mailboxes, Landscaping, and Roadside Fixtures
Mailboxes are considered an encroachment in the County right-of-way. Landowners are responsible for maintaining their individual mailboxes, including making sure the mailbox is securely attached to the post and properly placed.
Mailbox damage
Flathead County Roads & Bridges is not responsible for mailbox damage caused during routine snow plowing or road maintenance.
Mailbox placement
Mailboxes should be placed at least three feet from the edge of the driving surface of the roadway.
Keep the right-of-way clear
Landscaping, fences, signs, and other fixtures should not be placed in the County right-of-way.
Help Crews Keep Roads Safer
- Do not park vehicles, trailers, or equipment along the roadway during snow events.
- Keep garbage cans and other movable items out of the road and away from the plow path.
- Wait to clear the end of your driveway until after the plow has passed when possible.
- Give snowplows extra room and avoid passing unless it is clearly safe and legal.
- Report hazardous county road conditions to Roads & Bridges during business hours.
Right-of-Way Clearance
Landscaping, fences, signs, and any other fixtures are not to be placed in the County Right-of-Way.
