What We Do
The Recording Department is part of the Clerk & Recorder office and is, by statute, the official records repository for Flathead County. We manage county records for public accessibility. Individuals, companies, government agencies, and lending institutions use the Recording Department as a research center, and staff can help with records research, receipting of recorded documents, and data entry. Document indexes are the primary directory of all permanent records on file.
The Recording Department also issues vital statistics records (birth and death certificates) for Flathead County. These records serve as backup files for the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services in Helena. Working with the Plat Room, the office also records land transfer documents, certificates of survey, and subdivision plats to meet statutory requirements and subdivision regulations.
