About the Treasurer's Office
The Treasurer is an elected county official. Under Montana law, the Treasurer receives, safely keeps, and accounts for money paid to the County, and pays it out as directed by law.
The Treasurer's Office is the central point for collecting property taxes and distributing that money to the entities it is owed to, including school districts, cities, and special districts. The office also handles motor vehicle registration and maintains records of delinquent (unpaid) taxes.
Common reasons residents contact the Treasurer's Office include:
- Paying or reviewing property taxes
- Registering a vehicle or renewing registration
- Getting information about delinquent (unpaid) taxes and tax liens
- Understanding property tax due dates and deadlines
Some tax and vehicle programs are set by the State of Montana. When a service is handled by the state or another agency, we will point you to the correct office.
