For the past 15 years, Sara Smith has been a steady, dedicated presence in Flathead County’s judicial system—working behind the scenes to ensure court operations run smoothly, accurately, and with compassion. That commitment now continues in a new chapter as she steps into her recently elected role as Flathead County Clerk of Court.
Born and raised in Kalispell, Sara’s roots in the Flathead Valley run deep. She began her legal career as a paralegal in local law firms before joining Flathead County in a deputy clerk role. Over time, she advanced into an office administrator position during a period of staffing challenges, building the experience that led her to her current role.
Throughout her career, Sara has been deeply connected to the courtroom. From managing official court records and coordinating hearings to assisting judges and helping community members navigate complex processes such as passports and court proceedings, she found fulfillment in both the variety and the human connection her work offered.
“Some people are having the worst day of their lives when they come in here,” she shared, “but we get to talk to them like they’re humans—and that makes a huge difference. Helping people makes it worth it.”
Now serving as Clerk of Court, Sara embraces the challenges the role brings. Current staffing realities often require problem-solving in uncharted territory and flexibility from everyone in the office, with team members frequently wearing many hats. Sara is quick to credit her staff for the office’s success, particularly the senior courtroom clerks who support judges on the bench while also assisting colleagues, helping at the front counter, and serving the broader community.
“They’re phenomenal,” she said. “They’re willing to help everywhere and everyone whenever they can. I’m very lucky.”
Outside of work, Sara and her husband, both lifelong Flathead Valley residents, enjoy life just outside of town, surrounded by family, animals, and open space. Looking ahead, she hopes to continue serving Flathead County for years to come, building both a strong future for the Clerk of Court’s office and a life rooted in the community she loves.
