Election Judges: Be the Reason Democracy Runs Smoothly

Elections don’t just happen…they’re powered by neighbors who step up.

Behind every secure ballot, smooth check-in, and well-run polling place is a trained election judge ensuring that every voter is treated fairly, respectfully, and according to the law. In Flathead County, more than 300 election judges are needed to staff polling locations across 56 precincts during federal elections. That’s a lot of responsibility, and a powerful way to serve your community.

Election judges are the face of democracy on Election Day. They greet voters, verify eligibility, issue ballots, protect voter privacy, and make sure each vote is counted accurately and only once. Chief Election Judges take on additional leadership roles, overseeing teams, managing supplies, and assisting voters who may need extra help. Every role is essential. Every role matters.

Becoming an election judge doesn’t require a background in politics, just a commitment to fairness, accuracy, and community service. Judges attend a required four-hour training and are certified for a two-year term, with opportunities to serve in multiple elections. And yes—this important work is paid, including training time.

The next election judge training is scheduled for March 11, 2026, with morning and afternoon sessions available in Kalispell. Before registering for a class, interested residents must first complete an application with the Flathead County Elections Department.
