15 Years Behind the Gears of Local Service: Celebrating Master Mechanic John Tennant
If you’ve ever seen a Sheriff’s patrol vehicle, a Road Department truck, or an Office of Emergency Services rig navigating Flathead County, chances are John Tennant’s hands have helped keep it safely on the road.
This month, we are proud to celebrate John’s 15-year milestone anniversary with Flathead County. Starting his career with the County in tire repair, John has built a reputation for dedication, craftsmanship, and public service, earning his current role as Master Mechanic. Today, he oversees the maintenance and repair of our light-truck and passenger-vehicle fleet, ensuring everyone from our deputies to our Fire Warden can respond whenever our community calls.
Deep Roots in the Flathead Valley
For John, serving Flathead County is more than just a job, it is home. Born and raised in Kalispell, he comes from a multigenerational family deeply woven into the history of our valley. His great-grandparents operated a local farm where they became famous for harvesting and shipping Montana fir trees reaching up to 70 feet tall to landmark locations nationwide. His grandparents purchased the farm from them, keeping the family land intact for future generations.
Though the Flathead Valley has grown and evolved significantly over the years, John credits his extended family for keeping him grounded. His passion for mechanics started early, tinkering with cars as a kid. After over a decade in private service, and eventually founding his own local business, Keko Tire and Service, the appeal of steady government service and dependable schedules brought him to the County, where he has been an invaluable asset ever since.
Mastery in the Shop
Inside the Road and Bridge Department shop, John is part of a skilled 10-person team with a critical mission: keeping the County’s fleet operating smoothly through specialized expertise and seamless coordination.
"We’re all the best at our trades… that’s why we’re here." — John Tennant
John emphasizes that the secret to the shop’s success is the collective expertise of the team. Each member brings a distinct mastery to the table, creating a collaborative environment where problems are solved quickly and reliable work is standard operating procedure.
Looking Ahead
With 15 years under his belt, John has his eyes set on reaching 30 years of County service before retirement. Outside of work, you’ll find him enjoying the best of Montana life right here at home, fishing and riding dirt bikes on family property.
Please join us in thanking John Tennant for 15 years of hard work, expertise, and dedication to keeping Flathead County moving forward!
