When most people think of an Information Technology department, they picture endless server racks, lines of code, and quiet troubleshooting behind glowing monitors. For Ben Mikkelson, Technical Operations Manager for Flathead County, technology has never simply been about machines. It has always been about people.
Reaching his five-year milestone with the county this year, Ben brings a perspective shaped by an unconventional path. Originally from Minnesota, he made the Flathead Valley his home in 2009 after living across the Midwest and the East Coast. His early career wasn’t spent in server rooms; he worked as an educator on mission campuses, teaching youth, training pastors, and traveling internationally—including remote corners of West Africa. It was also where he met his wife. When an IT vacancy opened on campus, Ben stepped in to fill the need, combining a natural aptitude for computers with his passion for community building. That practical problem-solving eventually led to leading tech departments for larger organizations and managing database and software development contracts.
Five years ago, Ben chose Flathead County. With a young, growing family (now four daughters, and a fifth child on the way), the role offered professional stability during an important chapter of life. More than that, it offered a venue to lead, help, and invest directly into public service.
As a self-described introvert who genuinely thrives on human connection, Ben sees tech infrastructure not as a barrier between staff, but as a bridge. Alongside IT Director Justin Miller and the rest of the department, the goal is straightforward: build systems that actually support the daily work of county personnel and the public they serve. When innovative ideas surface to streamline operations, Ben focuses on "putting bones behind them"—translating vision into reliable, everyday structure.
The result is an IT environment defined by an open-door culture of service. For Ben, the greatest highlight of the past five years remains his team and the work they accomplish together. Looking forward, his approach remains grounded and focused on continuous improvement, ensuring the digital backbone of Flathead County stays strong, responsive, and purposeful for years to come.
