Standing water can become mosquito habitat. Report areas that may be producing mosquitoes, especially if the water cannot be drained or removed.

Reduce Mosquito Habitat
- Mow your law regularly.
- Create a barrier by maintaining a clean boarder around your yard.
- Remove standing water from containers, tires, clogged gutters.
- Use mosquito traps (i.e., Spartan).
- Grow mosquito repellent plants (i.e., lavender, marigolds, rosemary...).
How Flathead County Controls Mosquitoes
- Surveillance comes first. Staff inspect known mosquito habitat and respond to reports from the public. Control measures are not used until staff confirm that a mosquito problem exists.
- Larvae are treated when needed. Treating mosquitoes while they are still larvae is usually the most effective way to reduce mosquito numbers.
- Adult mosquito control is used selectively. Adult mosquito treatment may be considered when mosquito numbers are high, when disease risk is detected, or when other control methods are not enough.

Use the Mosquito Control Map
Flathead County Mosquito Control checks more than 1,700 mapped sites for mosquito larvae each spring. The Mosquito Control Map shows mapped inspection and treatment areas so residents can view activity near their property or neighborhood.
After opening the map, read the terms of use, select “I Agree,” and zoom in to your area.
Green
Sites that have been inspected or treated and are not a current concern.
Blue
Sites scheduled to be checked for mosquito larvae.
Red
Sites where mosquito larvae are present and treatment is required.
Reduce Mosquito Habitat Around Your Property
Mosquitoes can breed in many small, artificial containers and low areas where water collects. Anything that can hold water may produce mosquitoes.
Dump or Drain
- Buckets, barrels, and flowerpots
- Wheelbarrows and tarps
- Toys and outdoor equipment
- Low spots where water collects
Clean or Refresh
- Bird baths
- Pet bowls
- Wading pools
- Stock tanks and water troughs
Cover or Maintain
- Boats and trailers
- Rain barrels
- Swimming pools
- Gutters and drainage areas
About Ornamental Ponds
Ornamental ponds with good aeration usually do not produce mosquitoes. Mosquito problems are more likely when water is stagnant, shallow, or full of organic material.
Disease Surveillance
During mosquito season, staff use adult mosquito traps in the Flathead Valley to monitor mosquito activity. Mosquitoes collected from traps may be sorted by sex and species and tested for West Nile virus when needed.
If West Nile virus is detected in Flathead County, information may be shared through county updates, news releases, and public health notices.
