Investing in the Integrity of Our Public Records

Investing in the Integrity of Our Public Records

Starting October 1, 2025, Montanans will see a statewide increase in the fees charged by County Clerk and Recorder offices to record official documents. This change—authorized by House Bill 192 and passed by the Montana Legislature—raises the base fee from $8 to $20 for the first page, with $10 for each additional page.

Why the jump? It’s not just about inflation. It’s about investing in the long-term integrity of our public records.

Every time you record a deed, mortgage, or vital document, a portion of that fee goes directly into programs that preserve and protect those records: the Records Preservation Fund, the County Land Information Account, and the Montana Geospatial Information Account. These accounts ensure that the data behind your home, your land, and your community is secure, accurate, and accessible for generations to come.

Flathead County is committed to transparency and responsible recordkeeping. This fee adjustment is a step toward ensuring that our records infrastructure keeps pace with modern needs—without placing the burden on general taxpayers.

If you have questions about how this will affect your documents, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Flathead County Clerk and Recorder’s Office at (406) 758-5526. We’re here to help.
