September Is National Voter Registration Month: A Call to Flathead Valley Voters

In September, the National Association of Secretaries of State and the Montana Secretary of State’s Office recognize National Voter Registration Month. Since its start in 2002, this annual initiative has served as a reminder that the foundation of our democracy rests not just on the right to vote—but on the responsibility to be ready to exercise that right.

Every election, whether local, state, or national, gives citizens the most direct way to shape the future of their community. That power begins with one simple act: registering to vote. Here in the Flathead Valley, we want every eligible voter to be properly registered and ready to participate.

Too many people remain unregistered, and some don’t realize they need to update their registration after moving or changing their name. Others may feel disconnected from the process or wonder whether their vote truly matters. National Voter Registration Month is a chance to change that narrative.

In Montana, registering to vote and checking your voter information is easier than ever. Through the Secretary of State’s office, citizens can obtain a voter registration application, check their registration status, and find resources about upcoming elections at https://prodvoterportal.mt.gov/WhereToVote.aspx. Voters can also find Flathead-specific election information by visiting https://flatheadcounty.gov/department-directory/election.

Accessibility matters—but so does culture. We must build a community that values civic engagement and recognizes the impact of every single vote. Local elections are often decided by only a handful of ballots. From school board decisions to city council policies, from county budgets to infrastructure priorities, these outcomes shape our daily lives. If you don’t vote, those choices are made without your voice.

Voting is not just a right—it is part of our shared legacy. Generations of Americans have fought to expand access to the ballot box, from suffragists to civil rights activists, to the passage of the 26th Amendment lowering the voting age to 18. Participating in elections honors their sacrifices and strengthens our democracy.

As Flathead County’s Public Information Officer, I’ve seen firsthand the hard work of our Election Department and the many volunteers who ensure secure, transparent, and fair elections. But their work relies on one thing: voter participation. A healthy democracy requires informed and active citizens. And that starts with registering to vote and showing up on Election Day.

Ballots will be mailed to all actively registered voters on October 17. Flathead County voters will decide on critical issues: whether to fund a new Public Safety Facility with a County-Wide Bond, the 2025 Municipal General and the Columbia Falls Highschool District 6 Bond. Make sure to return your ballot by mail or in-person by 8:00 PM on election day, November 4th! Make your voice heard on issues that matter.

So this September, take action: make sure you’re registered to vote, update your information if you’ve moved, and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Then mark your calendar for November 4. Democracy thrives when we participate. Let’s make this National Voter Registration Month more than a reminder—let’s make it a movement.
