Building Strong Boards: Annual Board Leadership Training Reaches Full Capacity

Strong communities don’t happen by accident, they are built through thoughtful leadership, civic engagement, and a shared commitment to public service. One of the most important, and often least visible, ways this happens is through the work of local boards. From planning and zoning to public health, parks, libraries, and advisory committees, boards play a critical role in shaping decisions that affect daily life across Flathead County.

Each year, Flathead County partners with MSU Extension’s Local Government Center to offer free Board Leadership Training for current and prospective board members. This year’s training reached maximum capacity, underscoring the strong interest in effective, well-informed local governance across the county.

The training is designed to ensure board members understand their roles, responsibilities, and legal obligations, while also building the skills needed for effective governance. Topics include open meeting laws, ethical standards, public participation, meeting management, and board member liability—essential tools that help boards operate transparently, efficiently, and in the best interest of the public.

Serving on a board is both a responsibility and a privilege. Well-trained board members help foster trust in local government, encourage respectful public dialogue, and ensure decisions are made lawfully and thoughtfully. Just as importantly, board service offers residents a meaningful opportunity to contribute their expertise, perspectives, and passion to their community.
