Out of nearly 900 licensed food facilities across Flathead County, only three currently hold the highest food safety distinction awarded by the Flathead City-County Health Department: the coveted "Gold Star" rating. One of those elite kitchens isn't a fine dining restaurant, a luxury resort, or a major commercial operation. It's the modest but mighty kitchen inside Flathead County's Agency on Aging, where a dedicated team of seven staff members and an army of volunteers prepare and deliver approximately 500 meals every day to some of our community's most vulnerable residents.

The achievement is more than just a badge of excellence. It represents an unwavering commitment to protecting the health, independence, and dignity of local seniors who rely on the Agency on Aging's congregate dining and Meals on Wheels programs throughout Kalispell, Columbia Falls, Whitefish, Bigfork, and Lakeside.

This isn't just a standard high score on a routine inspection. An "A" rating is already excellent, but earning a Gold Star requires a a relentless commitment to preventative food safety. It means maintaining consecutive top-tier scores, executing continuous employee training, and tracking meticulous paperwork on every single ingredient from the exact moment it's ordered until it leaves the kitchen.

Led by Nutrition Services Program Manager Dave Caron, who brings an extensive background as an executive culinary chef to the team, the kitchen staff and volunteers slice, dice, and meticulously track temperatures to serve roughly 500 meals every day. These meals feed local seniors through on-site dining and the vital Meals on Wheels program, reaching our community in Kalispell, Columbia Falls, Whitefish, Bigfork, and Lakeside.

When cooking for a population that is highly vulnerable to foodborne illness, food safety isn’t just a regulatory checkbox; it's a matter of health, independence, and dignity. A hot and nutritious meal can be the turning point that allows a senior to stay in their own home longer, maintaining their freedom and quality of life.

"This achievement is a direct reflection of Dave’s exceptional leadership and the relentless dedication of our entire kitchen staff and volunteer network," said Agency on Aging Director Carla Dyment. "They pour their hearts into every single meal. Our mission at the Agency on Aging has always been focused on empowering older adults to age gracefully and independently in their homes and community, and a nutritious, safely prepared meal is an absolute cornerstone of that independence."

This Gold Star belongs to the seven hard-working kitchen staff members and the incredible network of local volunteers who keep this massive operation running smoothly down to a science. They treat food service as a calling, ensuring our seniors always receive the quality and care they deserve.

For Caron and his team, earning the Gold Star designation required significant additional effort on top of an already demanding operation.

"Running a kitchen that feeds 500 people a day is already a lot of heavy lifting, and jumping through the hoops for this Gold Star definitely added to the pile," Caron said. "But if a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing right. We've got a system down now, the crew works great together, and knowing we're helping folks stay in their homes makes all that tracking worth it."

Next time you see a volunteer out delivering a meal, or if you happen to stop by the agency, please take a moment to join us in thanking this team. Their quiet, daily dedication keeps the heart of our community healthy, safe, and well-fed.
