Concealed Weapon Permit Application

A permit is required if you will be concealing a weapon in an incorporated town (city).

A permit is valid for 4 years from the date of issuance.

Online Process Overview

Review the following documentation requirements:

Fill out the forms that follow here online, uploading the required documentation, and making payment by credit card.
Once the application has been reviewed and approved, the Sheriff's office will contact you to let you know the permit is ready.
Once notified, you will have 30 days to pick up the permit from the Sheriff's office.
You will be required to show a valid Montana driver's license or state issued ID to pickup the permit.

Disqualifiers

You are ineligible for a permit if you:

Are prohibited under Montana or federal law from owning, possessing, or receiving a firearm.
Are charged with, or awaiting judgment for, a crime punishable by more than 1 year of incarceration.
Have been convicted of:
A crime punishable by more than 1 year of incarceration; or
Any crime involving homicide, violence, serious bodily harm, unlawful restraint, sexual abuse, or non-consensual sexual contact--regardless of the sentence.
Have been convicted of carrying a concealed weapon while under the influence or in a prohibited place (unless pardoned or at least 5 years have passed).
Have an active arrest warrant from any state or the federal government.
Have been adjudicated in state or federal court as:
An unlawful user of intoxicating substances and currently subject to imprisonment, probation, treatment, or state supervision; or
Mentally ill, defective, or disabled and still under a court disposition order.
Were dishonorably discharged from the U.S. Armed Forces.

Permit Restrictions and Conditions

If you are issued a concealed weapon permit, you may NOT:

Carry a concealed weapon while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Carry a concealed weapon in:
Any building owned or leased by federal, state, or local government.
A bank, credit union, savings and loan, or similar institution.
Any room where alcoholic beverages are sold, served, and consumed.

Your permit may be revoked if circumstances arise that would have prevented the Sheriff from granting it originally. If revoked, you must surrender the permit to any peace officer upon notice from the Sheriff.

If you move to a different county, you must notify the Sheriffs of both your old and new counties within 10 days of the move. If the move is to or from a city or town with its own police department, you must also notify the Chiefs of Police in those locations.

Affirmation

The Sheriff may deny an applicant a permit to carry a concealed weapon if the Sheriff has reasonable cause to believe that the applicant is mentally ill, mentally defective, or mentally disabled or otherwise may be a threat to the peace and good order of the community to the extent that the applicant should not be allowed to carry a concealed weapon.

Definitions

Weapon
A dirk, dagger, pistol, revolver, slingshot, sword cane, billy, knuckles made of any hard substance, knife having a blade four inches (4") long or longer, razor (not including a safety razor), or other deadly weapon.
Concealed Weapon
Any weapon that is wholly or partially covered by clothing or wearing apparel.
