Birth Control

Emergency Contraception
Also called "the morning-after pill" or "Plan B." Emergency contraception is not a regular method of birth control. Emergency Contraceptive Pills (ECP) may be considered by anyone who has had unprotected intercourse or a birth control failure within the last 120 hours — the sooner it is taken, the more effective it is likely to be.
Family Planning offers Plan B One-Step ECP over the counter to people of any age during all business hours, on a walk-in basis. The cost is $20.00, but we will never turn someone away.
PrEP and PEP
Family Planning offers PrEP consult appointments, prescriptions, and medication directly from our office. If you currently take PrEP or may benefit from it, you can visit one of our providers and leave the same day with your medication — no pharmacy trip needed. What is PrEP?
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a medicine taken to prevent getting HIV. It is highly effective when taken as prescribed.
- PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%.
- PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from injection drug use by at least 74%.
PrEP is less effective when not taken as prescribed. Because PrEP only protects against HIV, condom use is still important for protection against other STIs.
Who should take PrEP?
PrEP isn't right for everyone, but several factors can raise a person's chance of contracting HIV. People who are HIV-negative but have an HIV-positive partner, people who have multiple sex partners and/or do not regularly use condoms, and people who use injection drugs and may share materials are all at increased risk and may be candidates for PrEP.

What is PEP?
Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is medicine taken after a possible exposure to HIV to prevent infection. PEP must be started within 72 hours of exposure — the sooner, the better — and is taken for 28 days. If you think you may have been exposed to HIV, contact us or seek care right away.
Ryan White Program
The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program helps people living with HIV get medical care, medications, and support services — particularly people who are uninsured or underinsured. The program is funded federally and administered in our state by the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services. Flathead County's role is to help residents connect with and enroll in the program; the program itself is run at the state and federal level.

Education and Presentations
Flathead Family Planning provides education in a safe, supportive atmosphere. Our lessons take a positive, experienced approach and are science-based, medically accurate, and age-appropriate. We work with youth, schools, agencies, parents, guardians, adults, employers, and more, and we'll design a presentation to meet your needs. All presentations are free of charge.
