The Benefit
Under Montana law (MCA 10-2-501), the county pays an allowance toward a resident veteran's burial:
- Up to $500 toward interment (burial) expenses
- Up to $100 toward placing a suitable headstone
A veteran is defined (MCA 10-2-101) as a person who was honorably discharged after serving on active duty with the United States armed forces, other than for training. The veteran must have been a resident of Flathead County. These amounts were set by county resolution 2296, adopted June 13, 2011.
How to Apply
Submit the following in person, by mail, or by email:
- Flathead County Authorization & Claim Form (below)
- The veteran's death certificate
- Proof of the veteran's service (DD214)
- A paid-in-full receipt from the funeral home, or a voided check showing payment to the funeral home
To submit by email, email the Clerk & Recorder's office.
What to Expect
Submit your application to the Clerk & Recorder's office. Once eligibility is confirmed, the Finance Department issues the reimbursement directly to the applicant — not to the funeral home or headstone provider. If more than one party qualifies, payment is made on a first-come, first-served basis in the order applications are received.
