County Governance
The Commissioners act as Flathead County's governing body. Their work includes official county actions such as resolutions, ordinances, public hearings, board appointments, budget issues, legislative issues, proclamations, opening and awarding bids, and purchase or sale of county property.
County Ordinances
Flathead County ordinances are local laws adopted by the Board of County Commissioners. These ordinances cover countywide topics such as animal control, park rule enforcement, litter, speed limits, and other local regulations.

Boards, Hearings, Bids, and Proclamations
Some county matters require public meetings, hearings, official board action, or appointments to county boards. Contact the Commissioners’ Office if you need help identifying the correct process or deadline.

Special Districts
Special district requests may involve petitions, public notice, hearings, assessments, or official action by the Board of County Commissioners.

Planning, Property, and Land Use Reviews
Some land use and property-related matters come before the Commissioners for review, action, or final approval. These may include subdivision or certificate of survey review, zoning issues, lakeshore application review, revocation of agricultural covenants, and purchase or sale of county property.
Many of these requests begin with another county department before coming to the Commissioners. If you are not sure where to start, contact the Commissioners’ Office or the department listed on your application materials.
Road, Alley, Street, and Speed Requests
Requests involving county roads, alleys, streets, or speed limit postings may require a petition, staff review, and action by the Board of County Commissioners.
Tax Requests and Appeals
Some tax-related requests are handled through county review, while others may involve the Montana Tax Appeal Board. Review the correct process before submitting a request.
Permits and Applications
These applications are submitted to the Commissioners’ Office for review or approval. Please read the instructions carefully before submitting materials.
Raffle Permits
Raffle permit forms must be completed and returned to the Commissioners’ Office for approval. There is no fee. Nonprofit organizations are exempt from the raffle permit process.
The second page of the permit must be completed and returned to the Commissioners’ Office within 30 days after the raffle date.
Firing Range Approval
Applications for firing range approval are submitted through the Commissioners’ Office for review.

Indigent Burial Assistance
Flathead County may provide limited assistance for burial or cremation expenses when a deceased county resident meets indigent eligibility requirements.
Applications must be completed and approved before burial or cremation services occur. A cost statement from the funeral home must be included with the request.
Assistance is limited to approved burial or cremation costs. Other expenses such as memorial services, transportation, embalming, caskets, urns, or similar costs are not covered.
